As we enter the month of March, the annual budget vote and school board election season begins. This year’s vote and election will take place on Tuesday May 21, 2024.

The New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) has published an informative timeline that is useful for all School Districts as a quick reference of upcoming dates and deadlines associated with the vote and election. This timeline can be accessed by clicking here.

A few updates: There is no longer an option to apply for an absentee ballot based on “risk of contracting or spreading a disease.” This option was added during the pandemic but has now been removed. The options for absentee ballot qualification remain: (1) patient in a hospital, unable to appear due to illness or physical disability, or duties related to primary care of an individual with an illness or physical disability, (2) absent from the county on date of election; (3) resident or patient of a Veterans Health Administration Hospital, or (4) detention in jail/prison, awaiting trial, awaiting action by a grand jury, or in prison for a conviction of a crime or offense which was not a felony.

Additionally, New York State now provides the option of early mail voting. Voters may apply to a school district for an early ballot that can be sent back to the school district through the mail.
